The accolade was presented to WHMS for their outstanding and unmatched environmental efforts during the 2011-2 school year.  Their efforts included: Utilizing single stream recycling in order to divert over 9000 pounds of garbage from local landfill, partnering with Terracycle in order to recycle “hard to recycle items”,  being the first school in Pennsylvania to recycle milk and juice cartons, conducting a compost study in science classes, partnering with DeLallo’s on a rain barrel project, sending a team of students to the Carnegie Science in order to develop  green initiatives for the school which helped obtain a $1000 grant, received a $2000 grant from the carton Council, sending over 1800 pounds of cafeteria waste to a local farm to help support livestock, and hosting Greenfest - an environmental fair that welcomed over 450 guests. West Hempfield Middle School is the first school to win the PA Waste Watcher Award.

    Asamo and Charlotte
WHMS's newest mascots are now enjoying some of the finest cuisine in town. Over the past week, WHMS students have been sending an average of 25 pounds of discarded caf food to Asamo and Charlotte at Logan's farm. They gotta be the happiest pigs in town! And, we are managing to divert another 125 pounds of garbage out of local landfills - while helping a local farmer.
