Welcome back to another exciting school-year here at Harrold. I hope you've had an enjoyable and relaxing summer break. We have several new teachers at Harrold this year. I am very excited to welcome Mrs. Huth who will be teaching in our newly opened second Autistic Support classroom. We also welcome Mrs. Clista to Harrold. Mrs. Clista, who is coming to us from West Hempfield Middle School, will be teaching 6th grade ELA classes. Mr. Barch has returned to Hempfield, and will be teaching 7th grade Science and Social Studies. Additionally, Ms. Gibala has returned as our Girls Health and Phys Ed teacher. This upcoming school year, students and staff will once again be greeted with an infusion of technology. Our entire building is fully equipped with Wi-Fi as the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Policy has been in place for several years. Students are welcomed and encouraged to bring their own devices to school including phones, laptops, and tablets. Individual devices are now not nearly as important as we have received additional chromebooks to be used in the math and ELA classrooms. This year is once again being kicked off with an exciting orientation program for our incoming 6th graders. On August 24th, at 1:30 p.m, the 6th grade team and their specialty teachers will be in to greet our newest students. During that program, the “new kids on the block” will get to meet their teachers, receive their schedules and lockers as well as folders with handbooks, assignment books, and a host of other “housekeeping “ type papers. One of the popular activities among the new 6th graders is to design and decorate their lockers and get set up before the year starts. Students will also have an opportunity to visit our student store, get their usernames and passwords set up for the computers, and visit the library. Our orientation program will kick off with an anti-drug message from the Reality Tour and a presentation about our yearly school-wide fundraiser which kicks off the first week of September. We are continuing that orientation opportunity and are welcoming our 7th and 8th graders to come to school as well on the 24th to get their schedules. 7th and 8th graders may come to the building between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. There is no formal presentation or orientation activity for those grades, but students are welcome to pick up their schedules and walk the building to see where their classes are. 7th and 8th graders will also be receiving locker numbers and combinations. At Harrold we are dedicated to keeping you as parents in the loop as much as possible on what is going on in the building, and making you aware of special events and opportunities. Only through this communication are we able to build strong bonds between the school and community. I cannot strongly encourage you enough to take advantage of the Parent Portal through Skyward to keep track of your son's/daughter's progress including grades, assignments, and absences. I also utilize that feature to regularly communicate with parents by emailing you with the contact information you have provided. Those that check their email frequently, and view the monthly calendar we post on our website, have a much better grasp of all the great things going on here every day. Our website is second to none, and has very timely information posted including photos, relevant documents, and information. Please stay very involved in your child's education and reach out to us with any issues you or they may have.
We look forward to an exciting year and welcome and encourage you to come to the building and be as involved as possible. Please give us a call if you ever have and concerns or suggestions to help Harrold become the best school possible. Please join us for our Open House on September 7th, 2017 from 6:30-8:30 PM. We look forward to seeing you here.
